For many students planning a Master in Management (MiM), the search begins with one question:
“What are the top-ranked MiM programmes?”
Rankings can be useful. But choosing a business school purely because it appears higher on a ranking table can be a costly mistake.
A MiM is not just an academic qualification. It is an entry point into a career market. Before choosing a programme, students should look beyond the ranking and examine six important factors.
1. Location Matters
Where you study can influence where you intern, network and eventually work. A programme in Paris, London, Milan, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Singapore or another major business hub may connect students with very different industries and employers.
2. Understand the Recruiting Ecosystem
Look beyond the university's reputation. Ask:
Which companies actually recruit from this programme?
A student targeting consulting, finance, technology, luxury, marketing or supply chain should investigate whether relevant employers regularly engage with the school.
3. Language Can Influence Employability
A programme may be completely taught in English, but the local employment market may not operate entirely in English.
In several European markets, knowledge of the local language can significantly broaden internship and employment opportunities, particularly for client-facing roles.
4. Internship Access Is Critical
For students entering a MiM with limited professional experience, internships can become the bridge between university and full-time employment.
Check whether internships are integrated into the curriculum, whether students can take a gap semester, and how effectively the school's career services connect students with employers.
5. Study the Curriculum, Not Just the Brand
Two highly ranked MiM programmes can be very different.
One may be strong in finance and consulting, another in entrepreneurship, technology, marketing, luxury or sustainability.
Your programme should support the career you actually want.
6. Think About What Happens After Graduation
Before accepting an offer, understand the country's post-study work options, employment regulations and practical opportunities for international graduates.
The BIDYUT Perspective
A higher ranking does not automatically mean a better choice for every student.
The right question is not simply:
“Which MiM is ranked higher?”
It is:
“Which programme gives me the strongest combination of education, industry exposure, internships, location and career opportunities for my profile?”
Choose your MiM as a career decision—not a ranking decision.
