Getting admitted to a global
university and being ready to live there are two very different things.
Your child may have excellent grades,
strong test scores, impressive extracurricular activities and an offer from a
dream university.
But before booking the flight, parents
should ask a more important question:
|
"Is my child really ready to live independently
thousands of kilometres away from home?"
|
01 Academic
Readiness Is Only the Beginning
University life abroad requires much more
than academic ability. Students must manage classes, assignments, deadlines and
their time - often without parents or teachers reminding them.
Self-discipline and responsibility become as important as
academic ability.
02 Can They Manage
Everyday Life?
At 18, studying abroad may also mean
managing money, meals, laundry, transport, healthcare, documents, personal
safety and daily routines.
These may appear to be small responsibilities, but
together they form an important part of becoming independent.
03 What Happens
When Things Go Wrong?
Homesickness. A disappointing grade.
Friendship problems. Financial mistakes. Internship rejection.
Challenges will happen.
The important question is whether your child can stay
calm, make decisions, solve problems and ask for help when necessary.
04 Independence
Doesn't Mean Being Alone
Maturity also means knowing when to seek
support - from professors, university services, friends, mentors or family.
Asking for help is not weakness. It is part of becoming
independent.
BIDYUT Perspective
Don't
Just Prepare the Application. Prepare the Student.
Parents spend years asking: "Which
university will my child get into?"
Perhaps we should also ask: "Can my
child manage themselves when I am not there?"

BIDYUT TAKEAWAY
A university offer opens the door. Maturity helps the student
walk through it.
The objective of international education is not
simply to send your child abroad. It is to help them become capable of
building a life anywhere in the world.
