Indian MiM student preparing for management consulting careers at McKinsey BCG Bain and leading global consulting firms

For many students considering a Master in Management, one career goal stands above almost everything else:

Management Consulting.

And often the ambition becomes even more specific—McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group (BCG) or Bain & Company.

Can a MiM actually take you there?

Yes—but the MiM degree alone will not.

The evidence shows that leading MiM programmes can provide genuine access to major consulting recruiters. For example, INSEAD reports that 32% of its MiM Class of 2024 entered consulting, with Bain and BCG among its top recruiters alongside Accenture, OC&C, Roland Berger and Simon-Kucher.

HEC Paris also runs an International Consulting Fair involving McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Strategy&, Kearney, Oliver Wyman, L.E.K., OC&C, EY-Parthenon, Accenture and other consulting employers.

So the pathway certainly exists. But access to recruiters and receiving an offer are two very different things.

What Consulting Firms Actually Look For

A prestigious business school can get your CV closer to recruiters. From there, the student still has to demonstrate:

Academic Strength → Analytical Ability → Problem Solving → Communication → Leadership → Commercial Awareness → Case Interview Performance

Consulting recruitment is particularly structured. INSEAD describes progressive interviews and case-based assessments as important parts of the process and specifically provides interview and networking preparation to its students.

This is why simply putting “HEC Paris MiM” or “INSEAD MiM” on a CV should never be viewed as a consulting guarantee.

MBB Is Only Part of the Consulting Market

Students should also avoid treating consulting as synonymous with three companies.

Beyond McKinsey, BCG and Bain, excellent opportunities can exist with firms such as Kearney, Oliver Wyman, Strategy&, Roland Berger, OC&C Strategy Consultants, Simon-Kucher, L.E.K. Consulting, EY-Parthenon and Accenture.

HEC's consulting fair alone demonstrates how broad this recruitment ecosystem can be.

Geography Matters More Than Students Think

Suppose an Indian student wants to join BCG after completing a European MiM.

The important question isn't simply:

“Does BCG recruit from this school?”

It should be:

“Which BCG office am I targeting?”

London, Paris, Munich, Amsterdam, Milan and Zurich are different employment markets. Language expectations, work authorisation, competition and client requirements can differ substantially.

A student targeting consulting in Germany, France or Italy may therefore face a very different situation from someone targeting London.

Start Preparing Before the MiM Begins

One of the biggest mistakes is waiting until the MiM starts before thinking seriously about consulting.

A stronger journey is:

Before MiM
Build analytical skills → understand consulting → strengthen CV → gain relevant experience

During MiM
Join consulting clubs → network with alumni → attend employer events → practise cases → secure internships/projects

Recruitment
Target offices → prepare applications → referrals/networking → case interviews → fit interviews

INSEAD specifically highlights networking with recruiters and practising consultants as part of preparing for consulting recruitment.

The BIDYUT Perspective

Students sometimes ask:

“Which MiM will get me into McKinsey?”

I would change the question completely.

“Which MiM gives my profile the strongest platform to compete for consulting?”

Evaluate:

MiM Programme → Consulting Recruiters → Target Office → Language → Alumni Network → Internship → Case Preparation → Work Eligibility

A famous business school may open the door.

Your profile still has to walk through it.

And remember: McKinsey, BCG and Bain should be viewed as potential destinations—not as the definition of a successful consulting career.

The real objective should be to build the skills, experience and professional network required for a strong long-term consulting career.
