Does every student targeting a top global university need research experience?

In recent years, many high-school students have started feeling that research, working with professors—or even publishing a paper—is almost essential for admission to highly selective universities.

But research is not mandatory for every student.

What matters more is genuine curiosity, intellectual depth and what a student actually learns from the experience.

When Research Is Valuable

Research can be extremely meaningful when it begins with a question the student genuinely wants to explore.

A good research experience can develop independent thinking, problem-solving, analytical ability, persistence and deeper subject knowledge.

The value is not simply in writing “research experience” on an application.

The real value lies in what the student learns through the process.

Research Is Not for Everyone

Intellectual curiosity can be demonstrated in many ways.

A future engineer might design and test something. A computer science student might build an application or explore AI. A social science student could investigate an issue within their community. A writer might develop a substantial creative project.

Different interests naturally lead to different forms of exploration.

Universities do not need every student to follow the same path.

Does a Student Need a Research Publication?

Not necessarily.

A publication should never become the sole objective of research at school level.

A small, meaningful project in which a student genuinely asks questions, investigates and learns can be more valuable than an impressive-sounding project completed primarily to strengthen an application.

Quality and authenticity matter more than quantity or labels.

Ask the Right Question

Instead of asking:

“What research will look impressive on my university application?”

Ask:

“What question am I genuinely curious enough to investigate?”

Research should come from interest, not pressure.

Don’t do research to build a profile. Do it to discover something.

If meaningful achievement follows, wonderful.

But the strongest outcome of genuine research is a student who has learned how to question, investigate, think and discover independently.
