Your Common App essay tells your story. Supplemental essays show how your story connects with a particular university.
For many US universities, supplemental essays are an important part of the application. They help admissions teams understand why you are interested in their university, what motivates your academic choices and what you may contribute to their community.
The strongest supplemental essays are not generic. They are specific, personal and well researched.
“Why This University?”
Avoid writing only about rankings, reputation or location.
Research the university carefully—its courses, academic opportunities, faculty, research, student organisations and culture—and identify what genuinely connects with your interests and goals.
The real question is not simply:
“Why do I want to attend this university?”
It is also:
“Why are this university and I a good fit for each other?”
“Why This Major?”
Don't simply write, “I love Computer Science,” “I am passionate about Economics,” or “I have always wanted to study Engineering.”
Explain where that interest came from.
Perhaps a project sparked your curiosity. A classroom experience changed how you thought. An independent activity led you to explore further.
Show the journey behind your academic interest—and where you hope it will take you.
Community & Contribution Essays
Universities also want to understand what you may bring to their community.
Think about your experiences, background, interests, values and perspectives.
You do not need an extraordinary achievement.
What matters is demonstrating how your experiences have shaped you and how you might genuinely contribute to the people around you.
Avoid the Generic Essay
One of the biggest mistakes is writing an essay that could be submitted to almost any university.
Avoid repeating your Common App essay, focusing only on prestige, telling universities what you think they want to hear, or simply changing the university's name in the same essay.
Every Supplemental Essay Is a Different Conversation
Take time to understand the question, the university and yourself.
Then find the connection between them.
Research carefully. Be specific. Stay authentic. Answer the question actually being asked.
Your story. Their community. A meaningful connection.
