The changing geography of global business education-and what Indian MBA aspirants should know.
Imagine two Indian professionals with similar profiles. Both have five years of experience, strong GMAT scores and ambitions to enter global consulting.
One dreams of Harvard or Wharton. The other is considering INSEAD, HEC Paris or London Business School.
Five years ago, the American MBA might have seemed the obvious first choice. Today, the decision is becoming far more interesting.
The numbers tell a different story
According to GMAC's 2026 Prospective Students Survey, the gap between the United States and Western Europe as preferred study destinations has narrowed considerably.

The United States remains the leading individual destination. But the direction of international interest deserves attention.
GMAC's 2025 Application Trends Survey also found international applications shifting away from traditional destinations such as the US, UK and Canada toward continental Europe and Asia.
But American MBA salaries remain powerful
Harvard Business School - Class of 2025
$184,500
Median annual base salary
90% of job-seeking graduates received an offer, with 84% accepting one.
INSEAD - Class of 2025

These salaries cannot be compared directly without accounting for currencies, job locations, taxes and living costs.
Yet Europe offers another advantage: many MBA programmes are shorter, reducing the time professionals spend away from employment.
For Indian applicants financing their MBA through savings or education loans, that difference can significantly influence the return on investment.
Europe's real advantage: global career mobility
Europe's appeal is not simply about lower costs.
INSEAD's 2025 MBA graduates secured positions across 57 countries, with 65% changing their industry, country or job function. Meanwhile, London Business School reported that 88% of its 2025 MBA graduates received employment offers within three months. Of its graduates taking jobs, 40% entered consulting, 25% finance and 24% technology.
INSEAD Employment Statistics
+1
These figures suggest that European business schools can provide access to international employers and diverse career destinations.
But European opportunities are not uniform. Language requirements, local hiring conditions and work-authorisation rules can make a substantial difference.
So, is America losing?
Not necessarily.
American business schools retain powerful advantages: established recruiting relationships, influential alumni networks, access to major financial and technology employers, and high graduate salaries.
However, the assumption that a US MBA is automatically the strongest choice for every international applicant is becoming harder to defend.
For Indian professionals, the question should no longer be simply Harvard or INSEAD?
It should be: Which MBA offers the strongest combination of career opportunities, financial return, international mobility and personal fit?
That is where the real MBA decision begins.
