Student and teacher discussing US undergraduate recommendation letter – BIDYUT Global Education Advisory

A strong recommendation does more than praise you. It helps a university understand who you are.

In US undergraduate admissions, grades, activities and essays tell universities a great deal about a student. But recommendation letters provide something different—the perspective of someone who has taught, guided and observed the student.

A good recommendation should not simply say that you are hardworking or intelligent. It should bring your qualities to life through genuine examples.

Choose Someone Who Really Knows You

Students sometimes assume that the most senior teacher or most impressive title will produce the strongest recommendation.

Not necessarily.

A teacher who knows your academic interests, classroom participation, curiosity and development can often write a much more meaningful letter.

Choose the person who knows you—not simply the person with the biggest title.

What Makes a Recommendation Strong?

The strongest letters usually go beyond general praise. They may illustrate your:

  • Intellectual curiosity and approach to learning
  • Contributions inside and outside the classroom
  • Character, attitude and relationships with others
  • Growth, resilience or improvement
  • Potential to contribute to a university community

Specific examples make these qualities credible and memorable.

Help Your Recommender Help You

Give recommenders adequate time.

Share useful context about your interests, activities and university plans so they understand the broader direction of your application.

But remember: the recommendation should remain the recommender's own assessment and voice.

Do not write the letter yourself or attempt to dictate what it should say.

Your Application Tells a Story

Your academic record shows what you have achieved.

Your essays explain how you think.

Your activities demonstrate what you pursue beyond academics.

And your recommendations provide an independent perspective on the person behind the application.

A strong recommendation helps confirm who you are.

Choose recommenders who genuinely know you, give them sufficient time and allow their authentic perspective to strengthen your application.
