When students compare MiM programmes, Kellogg immediately raises an interesting question.
ESSEC can take 2–3 years. Many European MiMs take around two years. So why is Kellogg's MiM only 10 months?
The answer lies in the purpose of the programme.
Kellogg Is Designed as an Accelerated Business Foundation
The Kellogg Master in Management (MiM) runs from September to June and is designed primarily for recent graduates with limited full-time professional experience.
Rather than creating a long period for career exploration, Kellogg compresses fundamental management education into one intensive academic year.
Students study areas such as finance, accounting, marketing, strategy, business analytics, economics, operations and leadership.
Think of the journey as:
Undergraduate Degree → Intensive Business Education → Career Launch
What Makes 10 Months Possible?
Kellogg's MiM operates as a fast-paced cohort programme.
Instead of spreading management fundamentals over multiple years, students move through an intensive curriculum designed to develop broad business knowledge relatively quickly.
This can be particularly attractive for students from engineering, science, economics, liberal arts or other undergraduate backgrounds who want to add management capabilities before entering the workforce.
But There Is a Trade-Off
A 10-month programme naturally provides less time for exploration.
Unlike a conventional two-year MiM, there is no traditional summer between Year 1 and Year 2 for a substantial internship.
That means students need to think about career direction early.
Someone entering Kellogg with good internships, strong academics and a reasonably clear target—perhaps consulting, finance, technology or another business function—may be better positioned to take advantage of the accelerated format.
The Chicago Advantage
Kellogg's MiM is based at its downtown Chicago location, giving students exposure to one of America's major corporate centres alongside Kellogg and Northwestern's broader professional ecosystem.
But location alone does not guarantee employment. International students should carefully evaluate recruiting opportunities, work authorization and how the programme fits their intended U.S. career pathway.
The BIDYUT Perspective
Don't compare:
Kellogg – 10 months
versus
ESSEC – 2–3 years
and assume that longer automatically means better.
They represent different MiM philosophies.
Kellogg:
Bachelor's → Intensive Business Foundation → Career
Longer European MiM:
Foundation → Specialisation → Internship → International Exposure → Career
If you already have a strong profile, meaningful internships and clear career direction, Kellogg's accelerated format may make sense.
If you need time to explore industries, complete internships, develop languages or reposition your profile, a longer MiM may offer a different advantage.
The real question is not whether 10 months is too short.
The question is whether 10 months is enough for you to become ready for the career you want.
